13th January – Day 6 (Everglades)

Started the day off with a drive up to Ona, Florida.  No particular reason.  Just liked the name, and when I zoomed in on Google Maps the fact that they had a post office popped up.  Next postcard sent to Nan!

12th January – Day 5 (Everglades)

Today started with some light rain and a full grey-water tank!  With all the showers and the kefir cleanup I needed to do some emptying!  Pulling out of the campground, I attempted to use the dump station.  No luck – the setup was a bit different from what I’m used to, and my sewer hose didn’t stand a chance of reaching.  No worries…I’d try on down the road.

11th January – Day 4 (Everglades)

Awoke just after dawn as I wanted to take the Scenic Loop back towards Shark Valley Visitor’s Centre, and I didn’t know how busy it would get.  Unfounded concern.  Didn’t pass (or get passed) by a single car.  So quiet and peaceful.  Also, a bit nippy, which might be why I didn’t see any alligators.  Lots of birds, though, and the scenery itself would have been worth the detour.

10th January – Day 3 (Everglades)

Got a bit of a slow start Sunday morning.  Didn’t sleep very well, but did manage to kill another half dozen mosquitoes!  After a very refreshing shower, I coated myself head to toe (hands and ankles included) with bug spray once again, and set off for Eco Pond.  A lot of the Flamingo area was hard hit during Hurricanes Katrina & Wilma in 2005; the lodge was destroyed, the marina, restaurant, and gift shop were damaged, and Eco Pond was overrun with salt water.  It had been the largest body of fresh water in the area, and attracted an abundance of wading birds.  It’s recovering, but there were no birds readily visible during my stroll.  I did, however, find a few butterflies…

9th January – Day 2 (Everglades)

Next morning I was up pretty early.  Took a wander through the campground with a bit more daylight than was around at my arrival.  Very misty this morning – there is a lake just off to the right of my site.
